Painful ingrown nails occur when a build up of pressure occurs between the nail and soft tissue causing pain, redness, and swelling in the area. This is most often due to improper trimming of the nail but can also be due to factors such as fungus infection, poor shoe gear such as narrow high heeled or pointed shoes, an underlying bone tumor, foot biomechanics or even due to heredity.

Symptoms : Pain, redness, swelling, and/or drainage of pus along either border of the toe, usually the great toe.

Treatment: In-office surgery is often necessary to alleviate the pain and remove the offending nail border. Depending on the severity and duration of the infection, the nail may be partially or completely removed via matrixectomy (destruction of the cells that grow the nail). Patients are given a local anesthetics and procedures takes approximately fifteen minutes. Patients may be given an oral antibiotic following the procedure and appropriate after-care instructions.
